she bakes a plum torte

I do love to bake and I love desserts, but that's hardly a good idea if I'm the only one here to eat the results. Andy is off sweets, Mo is rarely here after dinner and there I am looking at such dangerous temptations all evening. And the next afternoon too. Mo had this torte years ago at a friend's house and has talked about it ever since. It was one of those food experiences that is so magical and sacred in her memory that I was reluctant to get in the middle of that.

But there were the plums at the farmer's market. Fruit of the month.

Honestly, I don't know a thing about plums and stood before a selection of 5 different kinds wondering what to choose. I hadn't looked up the recipe so I just mixed them all up until it seemed like a pie full. Of course, when I got home I called my friend and looked up the recipe online too. Italian plums. Uh-oh, are they in there? They're white inside and it turned out that maybe about a third of mine were.

Regardless of the random mix of plums, it was now or never. Mo's going back to school in a week and Maggie and James were coming over for dinner too. It was such a relaxed, cool summer night, just right for baking. The torte was in the oven in minutes and was just as promised: easy, quick, memorable. My friend places the plums skin-side-up which I did too. I don't know what it was supposed to taste like skin-side-down as the recipe calls for, but I will always do it Nikki's way because it was perfect.

And I couldn't taste one plum from another. Pink, white, red, purple, they were all delicious. Why did I wait so long to try this? It's worth every single calorie. Apparently it's also good with other fruits and it freezes too.

And Mo? She was happy enough, probably would have been happier if I had whipped up some cream. So typical of my cooking- always missing one little thing I don't think of when I should. Like getting the recipe before shopping.

But it was delicious without the cream - and that little slice up there. That's all that was left. She wasted no time hunting it down for breakfast. xoC
