mother's day papercrafts

Last night I had dinner with a delightful new friend, Toni. She is a preschool teacher-- one of my secret career dreams. Listening to her talk about her class of 3 and 4 year-olds made me so nostalgic - again! Years ago I taught a summer art program for preschoolers...a great way to get in on and facilitate my own children's activities at that age. Anything that they could do and I could be part of was better than sending them off to daycamp. Of course it was so much fun, a little craft lab for kid-friendly projects and I think it ended up partly inspiring my book, Mothers and Daughters at Home.

Here we are approaching Mother's Day when mothers receive the most touching, keepsake gifts from their little ones. Time to get crafty.

This little card is one I made for a show promotion, but it is actually from a larger design that I did as a quick-kid-craft. The physical design is a papercutting placemat made from 2 contrasting sheets of 8.5 x 11" office copy paper. Fold one sheet into quarters as you would a snowflake cut-out only in a rectangle design. Draw and make a cut-out design through all 4 layers including a border. Open the paper and press out the creases with the back of a spoon. Using a glue stick or other child-friendly adhesive, apply the cut-out design to another sheet of contrasting paper. To make it into an official placemat, write a message on the back and then put the whole thing through a laminator (copy store). A set of 4, 5 or 6 with different designs and colors would be such a sweet Mother's Day tablesetting. Later, they look so cute tacked up on the wall. Affordable, adorable, awesome graphics...custom made for mom by the real artists in the house!   xoC
