shabby valentine

I'm off to the thrift today in search of more materials for a project. You never know what will turn up. Like this dish. Sometime ago, I found a stack of these, dinged-up tea saucers with gold rims seriously worn and rubbed away. There were even a few tiny rim chips in the scuffed and scratched glass. Still, they were so delicate and once upon a time, very fine.

Decoupage- the ultimate disguise and costume! This took about 10 minutes after I had the plan. From the back, I used Mod Podge to place the first layer, the edged bird round. Painted the carefully trimmed image itself with the MP and applied it to the center of the back of the saucer face up. Press the bubbles out. Then behind that and face up, a slightly larger round piece (the pink toile tissue) and then strips of old sheet music applied like spokes on a wheel from the center out. The old music has a pulp content that makes it ideal for decoupage. It loves the glue and soaks it up, making the seal very clean. When all was dry, I trimmed the outside edge with scissors and later applied a backing of more tissue, then tidied the edge again. More MP for sealer on the finished back. The little dish now prettier than before, its lost elegance fully restored.

When I ran across this image, it seemed like a Valentiney project too. A heart, photo...or copy of a love letter!...in the center and it's an instant keepsake. The gold rim is a bonus, any old glass plate will do. Some sugared shortbread heart cookies on top, wrapped with pink tissue. Something to love now and later. O so sweet.  xoC
